Çatalköy Armed Attack Suspect Görkem Mete Sentenced to 8 Years 6 Months
Görkem Mete, 21, has been sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison for opening fire on a vehicle in Çatalköy on 11 May 2025.
According to the court ruling, Mete fired at a car parked in the garden of N.İ.’s property on Mersinli Street using an illegally possessed firearm. After the attack, he attempted to flee by taxi but was apprehended within 40 minutes. During his voluntary statement, Mete admitted to disposing of the gun and his clothing in a stream bed. Police recovered one firearm, two socks, and a T-shirt as evidence.
Mete appeared before the Girne District Court in May, expressing regret by saying, “I wish I hadn’t done it.” He was initially held in custody for three days during the investigation.
Investigations revealed that Mete had come to Cyprus via a Telegram group linked to “hitman services,” allegedly agreeing to carry out the attack for 250,000 TL. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison.
