CMP Refutes Claims: Remains Found in Famagusta Linked to Muslim Cemetery, Not Missing Persons

The Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), Hakkı Müftüzade, has dismissed reports suggesting that human remains discovered in Famagusta are connected to the Committee’s work, confirming instead that the bones belong to an Ottoman-era Muslim cemetery.

Müftüzade said the remains were found during structural reinforcement works at Namık Kemal High School, and not as a result of earthquake damage as claimed by a report in the Greek Cypriot press. He stressed that the discovery has no link to missing persons.

According to Müftüzade, the CMP’s bicommual forensic archaeology team conducted an on-site assessment and determined—based on archaeological observations and historical mapping—that the area had been an Ottoman Muslim burial ground. The team identified east–west–aligned, orderly burials, consistent with traditional Muslim cemetery patterns.

He added that Famagusta Police immediately secured the site and notified the Committee once the bones were uncovered. The investigation was carried out in coordination with the Department of Antiquities’ Famagusta branch and the Famagusta Police Directorate.

“All contextual evidence confirms that the remains are unrelated to the CMP’s missing persons investigations,” Müftüzade said.
