Storm Byron Triggers Yellow Weather Warning in Cyprus
The South Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for isolated but powerful thunderstorms across the island’s western and northern regions, with rainfall intensity expected to reach up to 55 millimetres per hour.
The warning is valid from 5:00 p.m. on Friday until midnight on Saturday, 6 December. Forecasters cautioned that hail is probable during the severe weather events, which are expected to bring local rainfall totals between 35 and 55 mm per hour.
Meteorological officer Andreas Hadjigeorgiou stated that the intense weather phenomena would first affect the western and northern coasts, and possibly the south later, though the eastern areas are considered less likely to be impacted. The forecast is for a general worsening of the weather starting at 17:00 on Friday due to a barometric low named Byron.
Night and weekend outlook
Hadjigeorgiou noted that no intense weather is expected after midnight on Saturday.
Overnight from Friday to Saturday, low temperatures are forecast to drop to 10 degrees Celsius inland, around 14 degrees Celsius on the coasts, and six degrees Celsius in the higher mountains. The forecast also noted the possibility of snow or sleet on the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains.
On Saturday, the temperature is expected to rise to 20 degrees Celsius both inland and along the coasts, and to 10 degrees Celsius in the higher mountains.
A further two-degree Celsius drop in temperature is expected on Sunday, with rain beginning initially in coastal areas before progressively moving to the inland and mountainous regions.
For the start of next week, Hadjigeorgiou said the forecast for Monday through Wednesday indicates rain and possible local thunderstorms, with temperatures remaining slightly below the average climatic values until Tuesday.
