Erhürman Outlines Four-Pillar Methodology in First Meeting With Holguín
President Tufan Erhürman presented his four-pillar methodology, the ten confidence-building measures on the leaders’ agenda, and proposals discussed at the previous summit during his first face-to-face meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Angela Holguín Cuéllar. The meeting, held at the Presidency, lasted approximately one hour.
Following the one-on-one talks, Erhürman briefed the press, noting that this was his first in-person meeting with Holguín since taking office. Holguín is scheduled to meet Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides tomorrow at 10:00.
Erhürman said his discussions with Holguín focused on three main areas:
-
His four-pillar methodology, along with the reasoning behind it.
-
The ten confidence-building measures put forward during his first meeting with Christodoulides, which were later evaluated in a session Holguín attended via videoconference.
-
Confidence-building proposals previously raised during the informal summit between former President Ersin Tatar and Christodoulides.
Erhürman said the core agenda items were the proposed crossing point in the Kıracıköy area, the overall functioning of the crossing points, and issues related to solar energy panels. These topics were discussed in detail, and he described the meeting as highly useful.
He also noted that, at the start of the meeting, he informed Holguín that steps had already been taken to address problems at the Metehan crossing, including increasing staff numbers and continuing roadwork improvements.
Erhürman added that the authorities in South Cyprus had also acknowledged the shortcomings at Metehan, with both sides confirming a lack of personnel. He said the issue was discussed extensively among the negotiators, the presidential offices, and Holguín. While not all problems can be resolved immediately, Erhürman stressed that practical adjustments could lead to meaningful progress.
