Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu said microplastic pollution has reached critical levels, adding that the ministry’s action plan is now being implemented across the country.

According to the ministry, the decision marks a significant step in efforts to combat plastic pollution, which poses increasing threats to both the environment and public health. Beginning in 2026, all retailers will be banned from selling or providing plastic bags within the specified micron range.

Ataoğlu stated that microplastic pollution has reached its highest levels both in North Cyprus and globally, making urgent and effective measures unavoidable. He noted that the ministry and the Environmental Protection Department have completed the necessary legal regulations and officially put the action plan into effect.

As part of the awareness campaign, information sessions and cloth bag distribution activities have already been carried out across all six districts. The campaign, launched three weeks ago, will continue until 1 January 2026.

Ataoğlu said the primary goal is to reduce plastic use, protect nature, prevent the formation of microplastics and leave a cleaner environment for future generations. He called on all citizens to show responsibility and support the transition to sustainable practices.
