Letymbiotis: Erhürman’s Proposals to Be Discussed With Holguín on 11 December

Greek Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the four-point and ten-point proposals recently put forward by President Tufan Erhürman will be taken up during the 11 December trilateral meeting between Nikos Christodoulidis, María Ángela Holguín and Erhürman. He expressed hope that the encounter would serve as a decisive step toward restarting Cyprus talks.

Letymbiotis: Erhürman’s Proposals to Be Discussed With Holguín on 11 December

Letymbiotis made the remarks after Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulidis met with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín. Speaking to reporters, he described the meeting as “very good and constructive,” according to Omega Live.

He noted that the upcoming trilateral on 11 December could mark an initial breakthrough for the relaunch of negotiations. Christodoulidis is expected to brief the National Council immediately afterwards.

The spokesperson said both substantive issues and the Confidence-Building Measures agreed at two multilateral meetings were discussed during Holguín’s visit. Preparations for the 11 December joint meeting were at the centre of the talks.

Letymbiotis underlined that Nicosia hopes the gathering will become a starting point for the resumption of negotiations. He also described the presence of EU Special Representative for the Cyprus Problem Johannes Hahn on the same day as a “fortunate coincidence” from the perspective of the issue’s European dimension.

National Council to Convene on Friday

He said Christodoulidis has already called the National Council to meet on Friday, where political leaders will be briefed on the outcome of the trilateral discussions. He added that Holguín’s visit aims to prepare for a multilateral conference and that the UN envoy will travel to Athens and Ankara after her contacts on the island.

Erhürman’s Proposals on the Table

Letymbiotis reiterated the Greek Cypriot side’s position that a multilateral conference should convene as soon as possible, stressing that this format necessitates addressing core issues. The goal remains to resume negotiations from where they left off at Crans-Montana, he said. Christodoulidis, he added, is ready to respond to all matters raised, including President Erhürman’s four-point proposal.

Ahead of Thursday’s meeting, a “very concrete discussion” has been under way on restarting talks and preparing the UN-planned multilateral conference, Letymbiotis noted, expressing hope that Holguín’s optimism would translate into tangible progress.

He confirmed that Erhürman’s ten-point proposal will also be discussed with Holguín on Thursday. Holguín’s extended stay on the island, along with Hahn’s overlapping presence, provides space for important contacts, he added. No further meeting between Holguín and the Greek Cypriot leader has been scheduled, with the programme to be announced by the UN.

Holguín’s Phrase Was a “Verbal Slip”

Commenting on the controversy over Holguín’s reference to “the Turkish side of Cyprus,” Letymbiotis described it as merely a “verbal error,” noting that the UN and the international community’s established positions remain clear. “You can appreciate the sensitivity of the issue and the diplomatic manoeuvring it requires,” he said.
