Amcaoğlu Urges Residents to Stay Indoors in High-Risk Areas
Gönyeli–Alayköy Mayor Hüseyin Amcaoğlu warned that the Gönyeli Dam had overflowed following intense rainfall and said parts of Nicosia could also be affected, urging residents to avoid high-risk areas.
Speaking to BRT Morning News, Amcaoğlu underlined the seriousness of the situation, noting that heavy rainfall along the foothills had created severe pressure on the system. He said the Gönyeli Dam, which had been almost empty just a few days ago, had now begun to overflow.
Amcaoğlu added that the situation could impact the wider Nicosia region and that relevant authorities had already been informed.
He reported severe flooding across the area, with vehicles swept away, residents stranded and homes inundated, while municipal teams had been working nonstop for hours. “We have helped many vehicles and residents reach their homes,” he said.
Amcaoğlu urged the public to stay indoors and avoid all high-risk areas until conditions improve.
