Ertuğruloğlu Calls on South Cyprus: Dialogue and Cooperation Needed Instead of Unilateral Actions
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu urged the Greek Cypriot side to abandon unilateral steps that heighten tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and instead adopt an approach based on dialogue and cooperation between the island’s two states. His remarks came during the 5th Meeting of Energy Ministers of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), held in Istanbul.
Ertuğruloğlu, who attended the meeting at the Dolmabahçe Working Office alongside Istanbul Consul-General Zalihe Mendeli, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Energy Tuğşad Tülbentçi and other officials, stressed that such a shift in approach was essential for regional stability.
The meeting, hosted by Turkey, brought together Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Ilyas Bakytzhan, Kyrgyz Energy Minister Taalaybek Ibrayev, Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, OTS Secretary-General Kubanychbek Omuraliev, as well as observer participants Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto.
During the session, which focused on advancing energy cooperation among Turkic states and prioritised the “Green Energy Corridor” project inspired by the vision of the Caspian as a bridge uniting the Turkic World, Ertuğruloğlu delivered an address emphasising the growing momentum within the OTS energy framework.
He noted that, despite being a small island state, the TRNC holds significant potential for the Turkic World in terms of energy opportunities.
Ertuğruloğlu reiterated his call to the Greek Cypriot side, saying: “In this sensitive period in the Eastern Mediterranean, we underline that adopting an approach based on dialogue and cooperation between the island’s two states, instead of unilateral steps that increase tensions, is essential for regional stability.”
