PM’s Undersecretary Returned to Court: Detention Extended by Five Days
Prime Minister’s Undersecretary Hüseyin Cahitoğlu, who was re-brought before the Nicosia District Court today, will remain in custody for an additional five days. Cahitoğlu was detained as part of an ongoing investigation conducted by the Financial Crimes Division of the Police General Directorate.
He faces charges including receiving a bribe, offering a bribe, demanding a bribe, abuse of office, unlawful possession of explosives, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
30 PEOPLE QUESTIONED
During the hearing before Judge Şevket Gazi, Police Inspector Ertem Hoca presented the case details. Hoca said 30 individuals had been questioned and statements were taken from 15 of them. He noted that a witness statement alleges Cahitoğlu demanded €100,000 in bribes from an individual concerning a public-sector procedure.
OLD PHONE UNDER REVIEW
Hoca told the court that the suspect had changed his mobile phone in November and that the investigation into his previous device is under way. In response to a question from the defence, Hoca confirmed that Cahitoğlu had provided an explanation regarding his old phone.
Arguing that the suspect could interfere with the investigation, Hoca requested an additional five days of detention. Prosecutor Ali Hidayet supported the request, stating that further statements must be taken and audio-visual evidence needs to be examined.
Defence lawyer Süleyman Dolmacı noted that Cahitoğlu has been experiencing kidney problems, especially over the past two days.
Judge Şevket Gazi granted the request for five more days of detention and ordered that the suspect be examined by a doctor at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital.
