Stating that he would normally not take such allegations seriously, Erhürman said he felt the need to clarify the matter in line with the principle of transparency after the claims were also circulated on social media.

Erhürman explained that both he and Mehmet Dana did make phone calls during the meeting, but that these conversations were held with Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı and were related to the Mia Milia/Haspolat Wastewater Treatment Plant, a subject also referenced in the joint statement.

He underlined that the issue of the Haspolat Wastewater Treatment Plant had not been raised during the initial leaders’ meeting and was essentially a matter being discussed between the municipalities. Erhürman said they wanted to avoid the inclusion of any inaccurate wording in the joint text.

In his statement, Erhürman noted that anyone wishing to do so could verify the matter with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides or Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı. He concluded by saying, “Some tactics and old habits will gradually be left behind. We will continue with patience, composure, transparency and determination.”
